Neurology in Singapore has one national institute, a set of general hospital departments that feed it, and a private sector that grew around the same consultants. The route in depends on whether the problem is an emergency — stroke, seizure, sudden weakness — or a clinic condition such as migraine, Parkinson’s disease or neuropathy. This entry lists the ten providers that carry most of the work and how each is reached.

What decides the outcome

For stroke, minutes. Clot-dissolving treatment and clot retrieval work within a few hours of onset. Call 995; the ambulance goes to the nearest hospital equipped for acute stroke, and every public general hospital is. Driving to a preferred hospital across the island costs the time that decides the outcome.

For everything else, the right subspecialty. Epilepsy, movement disorders, neuromuscular disease, headache, neuro-immunology and dementia are separate clinics at the national institute. A general neurology referral is triaged into one; asking the referring doctor to name the condition gets you there faster.

Imaging access. MRI waiting time at public hospitals runs weeks for routine requests. Private centres scan within days at private rates.

National Neuroscience Institute — TTSH campus

NNI is the national centre for neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology, run by SingHealth but with its largest campus at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The TTSH campus holds the adult neurology subspecialty clinics, the epilepsy monitoring unit, the movement disorders programme including deep brain stimulation, and the central region’s stroke service. National Neuroscience Institute — SGH campus

The Outram campus of NNI serves the SingHealth cluster’s hospitals with neurology, neurosurgery and neuro-oncology, and runs its own stroke service with SGH’s emergency department. Patients admitted to SGH, CGH or SKH with neurological disease are managed by NNI’s teams.

National University Hospital — Division of Neurology

Public versus private, in practice

Rehabilitation after stroke is where the choice of hospital matters least and the choice of pathway most: every acute hospital transfers stroke patients to a community hospital for daily therapy, and the community hospital, not the acute one, decides how much function comes back. Ask about the rehabilitation plan on the day of admission, not the day of discharge.

What a referral actually looks like

For stroke and other emergencies there is no referral: 995 or the nearest emergency department. For clinic conditions, a polyclinic or CHAS GP referral gives the subsidised rate and lands at the cluster’s neurology service — NNI for central and SingHealth patients, NUH for the west, KTPH for the north. Ask the referrer to name the suspected condition so the referral is triaged to the right subspecialty clinic.
